Our Roots

Michael Toyama established SABJJ (also known as Toyama Jiu Jitsu) in 1999. The Academy was one of the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Academies in Adelaide. In the early days of SABJJ, Michael and his students would regularly travel interstate and overseas to compete in Jiu Jitsu tournaments, as no competitions were held in South Australia. During that time SABJJ became well known for their success on the mats, winning many national and international BJJ titles.

Michael Toyama’s legacy lives on at SABJJ, where his younger brother Gavin continues the teachings he started.
